2 million mark Wikipedia English articles REACHED

The 2 million English article mark was reached at around 9 pm (New Zealand time) on Sunday Sept. 9th. I underestimated the amount of time it would take because I started taking measurements on a week day and I suspect once the weekend arrived in the US people start inserting more English articles. My data from Sept. 6 10:00am until Sept 9, 2007 9:30pm resulted in about 2480 articles per day and hence around 243 new articles per hour! At this rate we should reach 3 million articles in another 403 days hence perhaps sometime in October or November 2008. Probably sooner, but you're guess is a good as mine.

Re-estimate for 2 million mark Wikipedia English Articles

Now I've got a full day of data. I count that yesterday's 24 hours obtained a new 2147 English Wikipedia articles. At this rate, in New Zealand, we will have 2 million English articles on Monday, September 10, sometime between 7.30 am and 8 am! Woo hoo!

However I wonder how good my estimate for articles per day will work out to be and I wonder how much Wikipedia English articles per day fluctuate? Any guesses?

Countdown to estimate for 2 million english Wikipedia articles

Well, i've done some computations and my new estimate of ten
days until 2 million english articles in Wikipedia arrives.

I am now keeping track of the number
of articles per day. I started this morning at 10 am and there
were then 1991618 articles, and just this afternoon at around
6 pm there are 1992106 articles, which is an increase of 488
articles in 8 hours which corresponds to an increase of 1464
articles per day which gives us the 2 million mark in 6 more
days on Wednesday Sept 12. I will keep updating the statistics
to get a better estimate over next 6 or so days. In any case,
I think we should know in a week.
