2 million mark Wikipedia English articles REACHED

The 2 million English article mark was reached at around 9 pm (New Zealand time) on Sunday Sept. 9th. I underestimated the amount of time it would take because I started taking measurements on a week day and I suspect once the weekend arrived in the US people start inserting more English articles. My data from Sept. 6 10:00am until Sept 9, 2007 9:30pm resulted in about 2480 articles per day and hence around 243 new articles per hour! At this rate we should reach 3 million articles in another 403 days hence perhaps sometime in October or November 2008. Probably sooner, but you're guess is a good as mine.

Re-estimate for 2 million mark Wikipedia English Articles

Now I've got a full day of data. I count that yesterday's 24 hours obtained a new 2147 English Wikipedia articles. At this rate, in New Zealand, we will have 2 million English articles on Monday, September 10, sometime between 7.30 am and 8 am! Woo hoo!

However I wonder how good my estimate for articles per day will work out to be and I wonder how much Wikipedia English articles per day fluctuate? Any guesses?

Countdown to estimate for 2 million english Wikipedia articles

Well, i've done some computations and my new estimate of ten
days until 2 million english articles in Wikipedia arrives.

I am now keeping track of the number
of articles per day. I started this morning at 10 am and there
were then 1991618 articles, and just this afternoon at around
6 pm there are 1992106 articles, which is an increase of 488
articles in 8 hours which corresponds to an increase of 1464
articles per day which gives us the 2 million mark in 6 more
days on Wednesday Sept 12. I will keep updating the statistics
to get a better estimate over next 6 or so days. In any case,
I think we should know in a week.

The MySpace Thingy Friends Phenomenon

Well, i found an old friend of mine: Steve Soltis. He is a painter who I knew from Spanish Town in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, in the United States. I found him yesterday, 2007 July 4, on that MySpace thingy, by doing a google search for his name. I've been looking for him for a while. But life is good. This is an image of a portrait he did of me way back in 1990-something. One of my best friends. His url at MySpace is http://www.myspace.com/soltisarts So I decided to set up a fuller page at MySpace for myself my url is http://www.myspace.com/howiauckland

There are a few images of portraits that a good friend of mine from Exeter, Piran Bishop. You can find some of his portraits on my MySpace page. Underneath Steve's portrait, I put one of Piran's portraits. Good stuff, eh? See them all at my MySpace web page, plus a recent image of me. Actually I will include it here too, it's in the middle. Soltis at top, me in middle, Bishop at bottom. Let me know what you think.

A Sunday on Motutapu Island with Pri and Francesco

That picture that I posted on my first post was from a recent tramping trip that me and some good friends of mine took last Sunday to the island of Motutapu. An island in Hauraki gulf that is connected to the giant dormant volcano, Rangitoto. Here is a panorama shot that Francesco took of the view from Motutapu of Rangitoto. Pretty cool, huh? That white spot on the left hand side, is actually ME! :)

It was a long day, and we walked for around seven hours. We were exhausted, toasty, tired, beat, done, cooked, well ripe and soon to be waiting for the ferry. I got a few blisters and was sore all over my body, but it was worth it. We saw some amazing views and got to see some amazing wildlife. We even managed to scale a few fences, which was exciting.

I've actually seen quite a few of the islands in Hauraki gulf now. I'll try and talk more about that. I might be going to Kawau island this weekend. Let's see if I can get some free time. I've been very busy of recent. The semester started today and it is FULL ON! Good fun though. Amazing topics. I quite enjoyed 'measure theory,' a post-graduate class that I am sitting in on. I am also sitting in on graduate, 'complex analysis' this semester. Very interesting topics.

Talk more soon. Hope everybody enjoys this blog!

My first blog post

Hi all! By popular demand I have started a blog using Blogger.

I have decided to title it, "Howie Cohl in Auckland"

I might change the title later, assuming this is possible, but this seems like a good description because it is I who is doing this blog and I am in Auckland.

If you do a wikipedia search, you will see that there is only one Auckland. That is the Auckland which is in New Zealand. That country to the east of Australia, which is mainly composed of two large islands, one to the north (north island) and one to the south (south island).

I am living in the north island in the biggest city in New Zealand, Auckland.

I am currently enrolled in a PhD program in Mathematics. I have a long history. I will try to keep anybody who is interested in my doings up to date right here at this blog.

Maybe I'll be able to continue, if so, then you will find more posts here.

Hope all is well!!! take it easy, Howie
